Short stay

This is not the first time we’ve bolted for a short visit to a nearby resort or hotel. Our list includes the Chãteau Laurier in Ottawa, the Reine Élizabeth and the Four Seasons in Montreal, Château Montebello in Québec, the Westin Nova Scotian in Halifax, St. Andrews-by-the-Sea in New Brunswick, the Jefferson in Richmond, the Parker House in Boston, the Waldorf-Astoria, the Plaza and the Carlyle in New York City, the Royal York in Toronto, Deerhurst Resort and JW Marriott Rosseau in the Township of Muskoka Lakes. Today’s visit to Playa Largo on Key Largo is significant because it was the first place we stayed several years ago when we visited the Florida Keys en route to the Casa Marina in Key West.

Today’s sojourn is precipitated by a notice we received yesterday from the property manager advising “Electric (sic) to the air conditioner will need to shut off for the day. And it could be the following day, depending on the process. Thank you for your patience during this process.”  Our accommodation was not entirely unexpected as the entire compound has been undergoing extensive repairs for the past three months; it now looks as though our turn for attention has arrived. Rather than endure the “process” we decided instead (it was the work of mere minutes) to abandon our digs for the duration and travel 5 mins (2.3 miles) from Buttonwood Bay Club to Playa Largo.

This minor trek next door is consistent with what has always been our perspective; namely, enjoy what is at hand and forget the hassle. We’ve already booked dinner reservations for tonight and tomorrow night. Our recollection of the dining area is an elevated view overlooking Florida Bay; the breakfast venue is an airy site overlooking the pool area. The weather forecast for the next two days is sunshine and 78°F (which, without a breeze or if sheltered, translates to something much warmer).

We initially investigated booking a room at Baker’s Cay (located between Buttonwood Bay Club and Playa Largo) but there were no rooms available. Baker’s Cay, while not new, was I believe recently subject to major renovation following damage from the latest hurricane affecting the area. In any event we’re pleased to return to Playa Largo. We had a singular experience there with the Chef who treated us to some very personal attention and a memorable repast.
