Refinement of Thought

Penetrating the Confederate South evokes a refinement of thought. Immediately upon trespassing into North Carolina the rarefaction of alternatives is instantaneously accelerated.

The Confederate States of America (CSA), commonly referred to as the Confederate States (C.S.), the Confederacy, or the South, was an unrecognized breakaway republic in the Southern United States that existed from February 8, 1861, to May 5, 1865.It was composed of eleven U.S. states that declared secession; South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These states warred against the United States during the American Civil War.

My first awakening to this filtration this morning as we continued our passage from the north towards Hilton Head Island was a uniform characteristic of the local automobile drivers. North Carolinians for all their judicious postering are seldom won’t to use their turn signals. Their ideas of direction are singularly internal; they are defiantly unperturbed by the needs or interests of others. From this trifling and tolerable identity the panorama quickly proceeded to more remarkable distinctions.

Deviating from the commotion and snow of Interstate 81 and proceeding eastward toward the Ocean along Interstate 64 we soon came upon Sea Pines and Holly bushes. The transition was fixed. Soon we were seeing repetitive signs of Springhill Outfitters, Bojangles, chicken tenders and “Are you preparing to meet Jesus?”

“It’s on my way to and from Florida and I finally stopped in, and what a pleasant experience! Super friendly staff, great selection of firearms and ammo.”

There were as well ambivalent references to Sir Walter Raleigh and generally common retail.

Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1553 – 29 October 1618) was an English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonisation of North America, suppressed rebellion in Ireland, helped defend England against the Spanish Armada and held political positions under Elizabeth I.

To close this long and winding road today is by coincidence the unraveling of the electoral monarchy in the United States of America beginning with the pardoning of the January 6th insurrectionists and inequitable pursuit of undocumented immigrants.  It is also by notable emphasis the 80th anniversary of the freedom of people from the Auschwitz genocide camps of the Nazi Party.

Auschwitz

The Nazis ruled Germany as a one-party, totalitarian dictatorship from 1933 to 1945. The Party used its power to persecute Jews. During World War II, Nazi propaganda portrayed “the Jews” as Germany’s true enemy and depicted their destruction as necessary for the Germans’ survival.

27 January 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, where over one million people were murdered, most of whom were Jewish.
