After a spluttering start on April 2nd – and the subsequent cancellation of the opening ceremony and rebooking – the Mississippi Golf Club officially unbuckled today April 12th, a blustery Friday. In anticipation of the event we had invited my erstwhile physician to join us for breakfast in the club house but he reluctantly advised he was scheduled to be in surgery. Undeterred we pursued our springtime provocation though admittedly this morning with a fraction of hesitancy given the intemperate conditions. We were nonetheless elated upon driving over the hill on Wilson Street in the Village of Appleton along the Mississippi River towards the golf club to see that the parking lot was agreeably congested.
The Mississippi Golf Club is an institution of local historic celebrity and unparalleled relaxation. Upon the awakening of the springtime freshet along the Mississippi River and the related flowering and verdancy of the countryside, it is an inexpressible relief from the winter months to foregather in the club house or upon the terrace overlooking the scenic 18th green and the Mississippi River.
The scenic Mississippi River that flows through and around the Mississippi Golf Club serves as a backdrop to the century old trees and manicured gardens, making it one of the most picturesque and enjoyable golf courses in the Ottawa area. The course is situated in the quaint village of Appleton, just a short drive west from Kanata on the 4-lane Highway 7. This historic, natural layout offers numerous risk/reward opportunities, allowing the course to be as challenging, or as benign, as the player desires.
The Mississippi Golf Club is a financially stable not-for-profit corporation owned and operated by our members. All decisions are made by the members or their elected Board of Directors. There are no third-parties involved in deciding the activities or the future of the Club.
And while the immoderate weather, though not egregious, stifled the anticipated enthusiasm of the springtime tradition at the golf club, we were reminded in short order that the excellence of the caterer, Chef Wendy MacDonald was unaltered. My communion at the golf club goes back many years beginning in 1976 in the dining room of the original club house upon an initial meeting with Messrs. Galligan & Sheffield, Barristers &c. precedent to my employment with the firm. Since then I have been gratified to celebrate countless occasions with family, friends and acquaintances, ranging from hearty breakfasts, extraordinary lunches and celebratory social functions. I willingly confess my submission and adherence to the communal superiority of Chef MacDonald and her exceptional staff. Nor frankly can I propose any other venue more desirably convened for such muster. It is the equivalence of having in one’s hip pocket a superlative and expedient resort.
Relishing the opportunity to capture these fleeting moments of exceptional conviviality has prompted us to invite our closest friends to join us with equally unlimited prodding. Notwithstanding the weather, the completeness of nutrition and socializing is undiminished. It is to my thinking a critical feature of humanity to involve oneself with others. And there is nowhere more propitious than the Mississippi Golf Club.

Our outside patio area overlooking the picturesque Mississippi River and the 18th hole is the popular place to relax with a cold beverage after your round of golf and watch your friends putt out on their finishing hole.
The club house also has men’s and ladies locker facilities with their own private lounges to relax in.
