Sunday Matins

The height of news today is that our friends Jay and Alana are moving to Nova Scotia. This heartfelt headline is the casual – and entirely unpredicted – release arising from my otherwise unaccountable notion to connect with them following their recent sojourn on the east coast.  It isn’t often that one encounters those such as they who have proven themselves so exotically and delightfully mobile!

And natually I am burning with envy. There is nothing to me more advantageous than the nautical theme howsoever rendered.  Their particular ambition is directed to the area surrounding the highly reputed Village of Chester and Mahone Bay.

Chester is a village on the Chester Peninsula, Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. The nearby waters of Mahone Bay and its numerous islands are well known for yachting and have made the Chester Yacht Club into a cruising destination. A provincial ferry from the village provides a schedule of daily trips to Big Tancook Island and Little Tancook Island.

During the American Revolution, Nova Scotia was invaded regularly by American Revolutionary forces and privateers, including the 1782 Raid on Chester. During this time some of the New England immigrants proved to be neither neutral nor loyal in the conflict,[6] including founders Timothy Houghton and John Seccombe against whom criminal charges were brought for sedition. Military officer Jonathan Prescott was also suspected of being an American Patriot sympathizer.

My late father and generations of others in the same bloodline extending as far back as the United Empire Loyalists are from New Brunswick. This credential – and no doubt an unproclaimed historic buccaneer feature – has insinuated my nature. I am for example quite certain to be capable of smelling the salt sea air when approaching the much admired North Atlantic Ocean.
