We’re staying at the Oak Island Resort on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. It’s not far from Chester; and, as far as we know, nearby the future coastline home of our friends Jay and Alana and their beloved dogs Louie and Roy. The resort is old and woody, reminiscent of historic shoreline motels though more grand. We initiated our stay here by swimming in the outdoor pool overlooking the adjoining yacht harbour and rock pier.
The evening plan was dinner at the resort restaurant. Having each had only an apple for breakfast this morning (when we left Prince Edward Island), we were the first to appear before the concierge at the resort restaurant for dinner this evening. We were ushered to a corner table overlooking the deck and ocean below. From that moment onwards for the next two hours we not only went up to the trough but got into it! Shamefully we each had two desserts! They were nonpareil!
Afterwards while recovering on the small patio outside our room, a smart young couple passed by. I had noticed them upon their arrival mid afternoon today. They had the appearance of frivolity and mischief – the enviable ingredients of youth. Thus predisposed, I tendered a cheery hello as they passed on their way to the entrance. To their everlasting credit they both took up the baton of sociability and succeeded to engage me and Denis in a welcome exchange of quips and commentaries. They – Gord and Petra – are locals from nearby but they have previously spent time working in Toronto – a source of joking on all sides. The conclusion however was clear that they unequivocally value their decision to commit to Nova Scotia rather than Upper Canada.
Tomorrow (for a welcome change) we haven’t anything to oblige us before two o’clock when we have arranged to meet with Jay and Alana. Until then, it’s unsustained indolence. We may well sleep late. But if the favourable weather continues – a weekend perk for our young lovers – we shall probably dare to take a light breakfast and afterwards maybe a swim. The luxury of nowhere to go, nothing to do!
